A Light Show on The Empire State Building Gets Synced to the Dead’s Live Performance of “Touch of Grey” (6/24/2017)

Some of my favorite things come together…

Last night, Dead & Company played a huge show at Citi Field in New York City. And when they performed "Touch of Grey" during their encore, a light show on the Empire State Building got underway, completely synchronized with the song. According to Jam Band, the lights were "controlled by veteran lighting designer Marc Brickman, who has worked on tour with Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Hans Zimmer and many more." Enjoy the visual display above. And see the scene on the stage below:

Indonesia Comes Alive During Eid al-Fitr with Photographer…

Indonesia Comes Alive During Eid al-Fitr with Photographer @mastirham

To see more of Mast’s work, follow @mastirham on Instagram.

For Javanese photographer Mast Irham (@mastirham), Indonesia can feel both intimate and colossal — a land of limitless possibilities. “Indonesian people have lived together with many differences for a very long time,” says Mast. “I think that’s why Indonesians are friendly with people they’ve just met and with foreigners. For a photographer, that attitude is definitely an advantage. People in the countryside like to have their pictures taken. We just need to spend some time with them, and it becomes comfortable for us to shoot.”

During Islamic holidays like Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the islands of the largest Muslim-majority country in the world especially come to life. “People leave Jakarta and other big cities to go back to their hometowns to visit family,” says Mast. “Taking pictures feels different, too. We see more people during prayer time, and during Eid people often pray outside instead of inside the mosques.”

Mixed Media Canvas Video Tutorial

Jenni Zmuda

I came up with this project quite by accident. I had a canvas painted black for another project. It sat on my desk for a while and some of my Roben-Marie Smith supplies and stuff got piled on it (I’m not the tidiest maker).

It gave me the idea to create on a canvas using the supplies. I love how it turned out! Inspiration came out of the chaos and I created this canvas for my first design team project.

I started by adding some book text. When you’re not sure where to start, book text is a great way to go. It’s visually appealing and I love the little peeks of text and the occasional found word popping out.

When going through any project, I try to make it symmetrical. If I add something in the upper left corner, then I try to add something in the lower right corner. As you can see from the video, I added the book text in the upper left corner, then the sticker strips along the bottom and side, having them intersect in the lower right corner to balance it out. The stamped owl image on top of the Art Pops card is off center and the half circles help to balance the left side out. Same goes with the embellishments I added. I put the leaves and the flower in the upper right corner and the butterfly in the lower left.

"White space" is not my strong suit, so to cover the space in between the circles and the owl image, I add a tag. Tags are great fillers as well. And I could not leave it blank (see above about my inability to leave white space – haha) so I stamped the heart image.

By adding the bumpy edge border on the left side using the mixed media papers, it covers some of the empty space. if I didn’t add that little border your eye would go straight to the black. This why your eye flows over the canvas, taking it all in.
