21 Things To Do To Improve Your Mental Health In 2017

1. Remove apps from your phone that might be stressing you out.

Seriously. I asked my coworkers at BuzzFeed for one thing they did this year that actually improved their mental health, and about half of them said removing Twitter and Facebook from their phones. Twitter and Facebook might not be your happiness-suck, but chances are, there’s an app that is doing you more harm than good. Try going without it for awhile and see how you feel.

3. Develop a morning routine that will set the mood for the whole day.

It’ll look different for everyone, but find a routine that will center you and put you in a good mood before you have to face the day. Think: Exercising, meditating, writing out your to-do list, thinking about the things you’re grateful for, even just taking time to actually eat breakfast, have your coffee, and listen to your favorite podcast.

These ways to make your mornings infinitely better might be a great place to start. Oh, and make your bed, because it will work miracles on your life.

4. And while you’re at it, develop a before-bed routine, too.

Wash your face. Make some tea. Unplug and read. Do one of these before-bed activities that don’t involve watching Netflix. Anything that you can do to unwind and put a positive cap on the day can help your headspace A LOT.

5. Replace “I’m sorry” with “thank you.”

Like, instead of saying, “Sorry I’m late,” say, “Thanks for waiting for me.” Or instead of saying, “Sorry I messed up,” say, “Thank you for being patient with me.” Obviously, there will always be things that call for an apology, but if you find yourself saying sorry a lot, this might help shift your thinking to be more positive and it’ll make sure your loved ones are getting your gratitude instead of your negativity.

6. Revisit some of your favorite things from childhood.

Infuse some pure unadulterated joy back into your life by rereading Harry Potter, finding your favorite childhood snack, listening to the first band that you ever loved, whatever. Soak up the nostalgia.

7. Call your Person on the phone more often.

Maybe for you, that means calling your parents to check in and get an instant pep talk or maybe it’s your best friend from college. Or maybe it’s just a friend down the street you don’t see enough because of your busy schedule. It doesn’t even have to be a long phone call — just say hi when you have a free five minutes so your day is a little brighter.

8. Find a general practitioner you love if you haven’t already.

Having a doctor you love comes in handy in so many ways — including referring you to where you need to go if you start having issues with depression, anxiety, stress, or any host of mental health-adjacent things. Not to mention, it’s great to have a stable professional relationship in your corner as you shop around for the perfect therapist, if you need one.

9. Try tracking your moods and habits to find the little things that make you feel better and worse.

“When your life and emotions feel so out of control or chaotic, there is something immensely therapeutic about organizing it into a systematic structure like a bullet journal,” Andrea Bonior, PhD, told BuzzFeed Health. “You lay things out in an aesthetically pleasing way and already it feels more manageable. Like you can really tackle it and make it through. It feels luxurious, too. It’s like saying, ‘I’m worth it. I’m worth this notebook and the time it takes to turn it into something beautiful.’”

10. Commit to a work-life balance.

Leave on time, don’t check your email past a certain point at night, and in general, don’t think about your work responsibilities at home, and vice versa. Doing your best in each place — aka not feeling guilty about what you’re not doing — will keep you sane and feeling good about your output.

11. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb at night.

There is nothing going on between midnight and seven AM that can’t wait ‘til you wake up, I promise. You’ll sleep better and your mind will thank you — because lack of sleep can seriously magnify feelings of unhappiness or depression and anxiety.

12. Be liberal with the mute, block, and unfriend button.

Because we have enough to deal with without annoying, anger-inducing, and uninvited comments from people on social media. BYE.

13. Listen to some hilarious podcasts in your downtime.

Because laughter is good for the soul. This list includes some a few comedies to start.

14. Check out your alcohol intake and how it’s making you feel.

Everyone is different, but it never hurts to check in with yourself about your drinking — especially if you’re prone to depression. “When you’re feeling depressed and you drink, that’s when it becomes dangerous, because the protective walls come tumbling down,” Jan Collins-Eaglin, PhD, told BuzzFeed Health. “Drinking is not going to make it better. If anything, it’s going to make it worse.”

If that sounds like you, maybe cut back for a bit and see if you see an improvement in how you’re feeling, or maybe commit to only drinking in certain settings, like on Wine Wednesday with your best friend.

15. Get rid of old things that you can’t use right now.

If you have stuff in your closet or in your home that make you feel worse when you see them — like clothes that you plan on fitting into again “one day” or mementos of an old relationship — TOSS THEM. You don’t need that shit bringing you down in 2017.

16. Make moves to get out of a shitty job/school/major/living situation/relationship/whatever big thing is making you MISERABLE.

It won’t happen overnight, but if there is something in your life that’s like a BIG DARK CLOUD ruining every other aspect of your life, it’s a worthy 2017 goal to make a change. Take stock of whether there are any big things in your life that are really getting you down and start making a structured plan to change them.

17. Write letters of appreciation to people you love.

Expressing gratitude is one of the easiest ways to improve your mental health day-to-day, so get on it. Bonus points if it’s handwritten.

19. Invest in a massage every once and awhile.

Pampering yourself = great self care. Also, I bet you $10 you’re holding a lot of tension somewhere right now and you deserve to get it worked out.

20. FEEL YOUR FEELINGS.

Don’t squash them down. Don’t force yourself to think positive. Acknowledge your negative emotions as valid. Not only do you you just owe it to yourself, but always distracting yourself from your emotions prevents you from learning how to cope with them, leaving you more vulnerable to getting derailed by them in the future.

21. Learn about resources available to you if you ever need a bit of help.

It never hurts to have this stuff bookmarked for when you need it.

2. Taylor Swift started dating Tom Hiddleston straight after splitting from Calvin Harris, which was pretty WTF anyway. But then things moved insanely quickly. Here they are meeting Tom’s mother after just NINE DAYS of dating.

3. Then just over TWO WEEKS after they started going out, Tom declared his love for Taylor on a T-shirt for the world to see.

4. He wore it during her 4th July party, which, as usual, included her billions of celeb friends. Including Ryan Reynolds, and this photo was born.

Here’s the summary: Taylor and Calvin broke up; things were totally fine. Some shit happened, they deleted every pic of each other, Taylor started her romantic world tour with Tom Hiddleston, and then Calvin Harris went off on Taylor on Twitter.

6. It happened when it was revealed Taylor actually wrote “This Is What You Came For”, Calvin’s song with Rihanna.

Calvin tweeted a string of messages which read: “She sings on a little bit of it too 🙃 Amazing lyric writer and she smashed it as usual. I wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals though. And initially she wanted it kept secret, hence the pseudonym. Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage though 🤔 I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do. I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”

That was definitely a Katy Perry dig, right?! We’d explain that one, but that was so 2015.

7. It was also the year there was a WHOLE lot of Kanye and Taylor beef. It started when Kanye released a song called “Famous” with the lyrics “I think that me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that bitch famous”. This caused a LOT of drama.

Her publicist told BuzzFeed at the time: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.’”

8. Then there was a lot of back and forth. Kanye said she definitely heard and loved it, Kim K backed him up in her GQ interview .

12. So of course Khloe Kardashian got involved, and it ended up being Khloe vs Chloë. Kim’s sister tweeted this, alongside a picture of a girl that looked like Moretz from the back with her swimming bottoms falling down and showing off her bare bottom.

14. But it wasn’t all about Taylor. Lindsay Lohan debuted a new weird accent.

She said it’s a “mixture of most of the languages I can understand or am trying to learn”.

20. Then there was all the Blac Chyna/Rob Kardashian drama. We’re over the shock of them getting together. We think we’re even almost over them having a baby together and calling their daughter Dream Kardashian

21. But we’re not sure we’re over their relationship in early December. It’s a bit of a long story, but it started with a load of messages that appeared on Blac Chyna’s Instagram account.

What followed was a long, long list of purported messages between Chyna and others, including one which allegedly tried to show her making plans to trademark the Kardashian name, while others badmouthed Rob. It’s important to note that we could never verify whether the messages were real or not.

22. But things got weirder just after that when Rob started posting on Snapchat claiming she’d walked out on him for Christmas with their baby. As he toured his empty home he said, “Got the Christmas tree all set up for Chyna and the baby, but they left me.”

Oh, and to make matters worse she apparently left with all of the food from the house as well. “She took all the Eggos. Man, all my Eggos,” he said as he showed viewers an empty fridge and pantry. “Where’s my sugar? She took my sugar! She took my OPEN bag of my favorite chips!”

23. Then, because this wasn’t all weird enough, Rob started posting memes — HONEST TO GOD, MEMES — about the apparent breakup of his family.

Todd Fisher is currently dealing with the heartbreak of losing his sister, Carrie Fisher, and mom, Debbie Reynolds, within one day of each other earlier this week. While celebrities, former costars, and fans have been offering their support in a number of ways, Todd opened up about how he’s coping in an interview with 20/20 on Friday. Todd, who also recently shared a beautiful drawing of Carrie and Debbie reuniting in Heaven, talked with Elizabeth Vargas about the legacy the two women leave behind. See his most beautiful and heartbreaking quotes below.

  • "From the family’s perspective, this is Debbie’s destiny. She didn’t want to leave Carrie and did not want to her to be alone. My mother had said, ‘I don’t want to attend my daughter’s funeral.’ [While planning Carrie’s funeral], she said she wanted to be with Carrie."
  • "[Debbie] didn’t die of a broken heart. She just left to be with Carrie…Carrie was a force of nature in her own right, you know. It took another force of nature to bridle and work with that and she was great with her."
  • "It wasn’t that [Debbie] was sitting around inconsolable – not at all. She simply said that she didn’t get to see Carrie come back from London. She expressed how much she loved my sister. She then said she really wanted to be with Carrie. In those precise words, and within 15 minutes from that conversation, she faded out. Within 30 minutes, she technically was gone. She started to have a stroke, and she just effectively went to sleep and didn’t wake up. She closed her eyes, peacefully like you’re going to sleep, and she literally went to sleep and left. My mother, if anybody, had somehow a way to do that, and I watched it happen in front of my face. I was on her bed with her, and I watched her leave and go to Carrie. God said, ‘Get up here, and give us a hand.’"
  • Todd said that Carrie "was at the top of her game" earlier this month while promoting her new projects, including her new memoir, The Princess Diarist, in England. "She was excited about Christmas. Her favorite thing to do was give out gifts. She always had the most amazing things for everybody."
  • "We thought we might be able to save [Carrie] – that was in play for a little while. [It was] not a sure thing, by any means, but [Debbie] felt she had already left the building, so to speak."
  • Todd revealed that the mother and daughter will be laid to rest next to each other. "It’s horrible, it’s beautiful, it’s magical. They’re together."

2 Dead, 2 Injured After Meek Mill Concert in Connecticut

Two people are dead and two more are injured after a shooting following a Meek Mill concert at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Connecticut on Friday night, My Record Journal reports (via The Fader). Police responded to reports of gunshots at 11:12 p.m., after the show had ended, as concertgoers and Mill were leaving the venue. The victims have been identified by police as Travis Ward, 31, and Jacquan Graves, 20. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made. Wallingford Police Lt. Cheryl Bradley said the shooting isn’t related to Meek Mill. James Bozzi, the head of marketing in Connecticut for Live Nation (which owns the Oakdale Theater), told My Record Journal that the venue has no plans to postpone or cancel its next show.
